Media summary

Amongst the eucalypts in the eagle鈥檚 eyrie is a home that unfolds embracing nature鈥檚 upper realm. A place of sanctuary and contemplation, where engaging with the landscape occurs with the solace of protection from the extremes.

Our clients sought a home of both refuge and connection鈥攁 space that might evoke the immersive experiences of camping in natures vastness that allowed for moments of solitude and communal gathering, where family and friends too could find their own space within nature鈥檚 embrace.

Sculpted by the forces of its environment, More than a place of shelter, the house is an instrument of contemplation with a profound connection to place that is not an imposition on the land, but an extension of it that invites you to experience the vastness of its landscape and sky. Its modest scale evokes a sense not of inside/outside rooms but of being elevated, belonging to a larger landscape.

Amongst the Eucalypts is set high behind the tree line on a steeply sloped site. The house is grounded along the hill鈥檚 natural contour – its split form allowing for intimate, private moments while maintaining a quiet dialogue between space and landscape beyond. A palette of raw and robust materials – ply, light-weight cladding and metal – sits comfortably within the remote setting, offering low maintenance and protection from bushfire. The operable facade, outdoor washrooms, and loose-fit interior evoke a spirit of impermanence. The jury commend the design team for the way which this home has been skillfully sited and tuned to its context. Free from bright city lights, this is architecture that listens before it speaks.

The house is a piece of concrete origami; enabling immediate yet protected experience of the bush, shutters, screens beautiful to touch, playful to move, suspended in the sky with eagles, grounded with the dingoes, a modest scale not interrupting the lake with the gratitude of being protected from the real threat of fire.

It’s to experience the profundity of a plywood 鈥渢ent鈥; ten can sleep without compromise, rainwater showers, sound insulation to beam into work with goannas, added to which, the wholly unexpected experience of a building itself an instrument of contemplation, a feeling of being grateful for it all, without more.
