Nestled in the rural landscape of Linville, Queensland, The Rail Trail Refuge offers short term accommodation for bicycle riders exploring the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Inspired by her cycling adventures in Europe, our client envisioned a safe, practical retreat catering to “Human Powered Holiday Makers.†The resulting design consists of two parallel modules—one housing a caretaker’s residence, the other providing comfortable overnight sleeping quarters and amenities for up to 6 cyclists. Between them, connected decks and a plunge pool create communal spaces for rest and connection, with the plan echoing the typology of traditional railway stations. The efficiency of the project’s compact footprint, use of raw materials and exposed handcrafted structure reflects Rail Trail Refuge’s rural context.
Rail Trail Refuge sets a new benchmark for regional tourist accommodation along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in Linville, northwest of Brisbane. Inspired by the historic railways of the region, this project provides compact and secure accommodation and communal facilities for cyclists, discreetly positioned adjacent the client’s caretaker’s residence.
Refresh*Design has achieved exceptional value for their client within the project’s modest size and budget, supporting an economically viable venture that balances functionality, efficient use of materials and innovation with a deep appreciation for place.
Excellent service from beginning to end. Every now and then I have to pinch myself that my dream is now reality and I can spend my days in such a beautifully designed place. Thanks R*.
