Media summary

Small Wonder Winery, located in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, is a redevelopment of the former Goaty Hill Vineyard. Designed by KHA and Edwards + Simpson Architects, the winery features three gable shed forms connected by flat-roofed ancillary spaces, set amidst rehabilitated bushland and native gardens. The facility includes fermentation halls, barrel rooms, and production spaces designed to engage visitors and showcase the winemaking process. Expansive glazing and skylights provide views into the winery’s operations and the surrounding vineyard and bushland. Sustainability is central to the design, with passive strategies such as natural ventilation and insulated precast concrete ensuring energy efficiency while the roof provides large areas for rainwater collection and electricity generation via photovoltaic panels. The project successfully meets the client’s vision for a functional, sustainable, and educational space that aligns with their commitment to organic certification and fosters creativity, community engagement, and environmental responsibility.

Our dream of a cool-climate vineyard led us to the Tamar Valley, where we collaborated with KHA and Edwards + Simpson to create Small Wonder Winery. The design enhances our operational efficiency, seamlessly integrating winemaking, bottling, and storage with the surrounding environment. By incorporating local materials and sustainable practices, the winery reflects Tasmania’s heritage while supporting our organic certification. It’s a space that fosters creativity, education, and community, enabling us to host tours and events while offering a unique, functional space that blends modernity with nature—perfectly supporting our work, play, and environmental values.
