Hands Memorial Oval Stadium was designed to encourage and support community connectivity and inclusion. The new building supports football from a local to a national level, enhancing the experience for all participants and enabling greater participation in sport with modern adaptable, accessible and gender-neutral facilities.
The natural and neutral material palate, together with retention of existing trees and significant landscaping on the public realm, the design is specifically tailored to its site and locality, providing an elegant and coherent development and contributes to a sense of place.
The design of the stadium has enabled Hands Memorial Oval to support both local and national levels of AFL competition, whilst improving gender equity and inclusion. The design has also enabled Bunbury to secure an AFL premiership match for the next 3 years and an AFL preseason match in 2025. This is the first time AFL premiership matches have been played outside of Perth and represents a huge economic and tourism opportunity for the Bunbury Geographe region. The new stadium will increase participation in sport, especially by females and people with a disability by providing a contemporary and accessible facility.
