Melbourne Place is a new independent hotel accommodated in a 鈥渃omplete design鈥, a new building with fully integrated interiors, carried out by a single team. Work included collaborating on the hotel brand in conjunction with Client Josh Taylor, brand agency Studio Round and Hotel Managing Director Tracy Atherton. The design of the building derives from the particular architectural and cultural identity of Melbourne generally but more specifically, the actual site in the east-end of the CBD. The mass and detail have a twentieth century quality, reinforced by the highly modelled tinted concrete and brick fa莽ade and the operable shutters to every guest-room. Sensibilities around space, volume, light, colour, texture and detail are consistent from the urban scale down to the cabinet hardware lending a sense of substance, a complete vision, each element reinforcing and amplifying the unique character of the place.
Hotels can be sentinels in the city that create new patterns of sociability and expand the city鈥檚 capacity to welcome visitors while orchestrating new experiences for its community. Melbourne Place so aptly named has opened its doors to the city in a manner that has captivated both visitors and residents.
In a rare commissioning process, Kennedy Nolan has shaped the entire project from its inception. They collaborated closely with a small group that came together to create a brief for a hotel with the ethos of working within the structure and culture of 鈥楥entral Melbourne鈥. Shaped by both its frontage to Russell Street and three distinctly variant laneway elevations the building鈥檚 form suggests 鈥榞ood neighbourliness鈥. A series of vantage points for congregation have been established both as major spaces and open terraces that orient into street and laneways and across the city. The experience is constantly of being 鈥榳ithin Melbourne鈥.
The architect鈥檚 early conception of 鈥渁n abstract zoomorphic form鈥 is strongly evident as both emblem and guiding rule translated into every detail of a sequence of remarkable Melbourne interiors. With an orchestration that includes many local makers and artists Melbourne Place draws from and adds to the theatricality of the city鈥檚 social life.
