Architects Award Update: What Employers and Employees Need to Know

Brisbane, 1 July 2025 — The Fair Work Commission has released an updated version of the Architects Award [MA000079], effective from 1 July 2025, introducing revised pay rates and clarifying key employment conditions for architectural professionals across Australia.

The changes aim to support fair and transparent workplace practices, particularly for early-career professionals who may face challenges in negotiating employment contracts aligned with minimum award standards.

Minimum Award Rates

The revised pay guide outlines new minimum rates across various classifications. For example:

Graduate of Architecture (Level 1 – Entry):

  • $1,247.90 per week or $32.84 per hour (full-time)
  • $41.05 per hour (casual)

Registered Architect (Level 2b – Entry):

  • $1,442.70 per week or $37.97 per hour (full-time)
  • $47.46 per hour (casual)

These rates reflect the national minimum wage increase and are designed to ensure fair remuneration across the profession.

Working Hours and Overtime

  • Full-time employees are entitled to a standard 38-hour work week.
  • Hours worked beyond this threshold must be compensated at overtime rates, typically 150% of the base hourly rate.
  • The award also supports flexible working arrangements and reinforces the right to disconnect outside of work hours.

Leave Loading

Employees taking annual leave are entitled to a 17.5% leave loading, providing additional financial support during time off.

Supporting Fair Workplaces

This update serves as a valuable resource for both employees and employers in understanding their rights and responsibilities under the award. It is particularly relevant for graduates and emerging professionals who may be navigating employment contracts for the first time.
