Dear Members,

I am pleased to provide an update on the evolution of the Institute’s board remuneration structure. Following strong member support at the Annual General Meeting on 3 May at the Australian Architecture Conference, National Council has finalised the model, with all Directors remunerated not just Independent Directors. This marks a significant step forward in ensuring our leadership model is inclusive, equitable, and aligned with best practice in modern governance.

The new structure recognises the responsible nature of the role and the time commitment and expertise required of directors. It removes financial barriers to participation and supports a more inclusive and accessible model of leadership.

This approach will assist with succession planning and help attract and retain outstanding individuals. It

also aligns with leading practice and strengthens the Institute’s governance.

With the member-approved allocation of $ $315,000, National Council undertook a thorough process to determine how the funds should best be distributed across our eight-person Board. The following initial breakdown was endorsed (amounts include superannuation):

  • Board Chair: $66,000
  • Board Members (7): $27,000 each, totalling $189,000
  • Board Committee Chairs (3): $13,500 each, totalling $40,500

This brings the initial total remuneration to $295,500 with allowance for small annual increases in the future to account for CPI changes . The model provides fair and transparent support for those serving in key leadership roles.

This reform is about more than numbers. It signals a commitment to a more inclusive and sustainable future for our Institute. Our governance roles are now more accessible to a wider and more diverse group of members, and the responsibilities of leadership are better recognised and supported.

Thank you for your ongoing engagement as we continue to strengthen the Institute together.

Warm regards,

Adam Haddow
National President
