Tasmanian architecture showcased at Hobart exhibition in 2025

The 2025 Tasmanian Architecture Awards Hobart Exhibition will be launched on Thursday, June 5 at Brooke Street Pier, where all the projects entered in this year’s awards will be on show.

The exhibition displays the 21 projects entered in the 2025 awards program, along with the 15 projects eligible for the John Lee Archer Triennial Prize.

The projects entered in the 2025 Tasmanian Architecture Awards span ten primary categories and constitute a total of 26 individual entries that showcase the range of diverse and exemplary new architecture produced across the state. Many of these projects are located within and around the south of the state.

These include clever and respectful alterations and additions to significant heritage buildings, such as the Philip Smith Centre by Lovell Chen; creative and playful learning spaces of all shapes and size, including Alma Street Childcare Centre by 1+2 Architecture and Brighton High School, by JAWS Architects with K2LD Architects and HBV Architects; and critical public buildings, such as the Glenorchy Ambulance Station by Morrison & Breytenbach, and many more.

The pinnacle event for the Tasmanian profession, President of the Tasmanian Chapter of the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, Daniel Lane, says, ‘architecture is not realised in isolation. It is the efforts of many that successfully procure and realise buildings. Architecture is an inherently collaborative process – between clients, architects, consultants, and builders and is in every way the absolute result of the collective effort.’ He thanks and acknowledges all who are involved in making extraordinary buildings, ‘architecture is realised when we work with collaborators who truly understand and respect design intent and integrate this into the design solution. It is those teams in our practices that bring the work to life, that give it meaning and form. Collaboration remains at the heart of delivering meaningful architecture.’

2025 Tasmanian Architecture Awards Jury Chair, Sarah Lindsay, noted that many of the projects entered, ‘were delivered under challenging conditions, shaped by economic pressures and the ongoing ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.’

‘Our Tasmanian architects are to be commended for their resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to elevating the human experience. Across all scales and typologies, we witnessed a consistent dedication to enhancing the lives of building occupants and enriching the fabric of our communities’ Sarah said.

The award recipients in each category – along with a number of other awards including the John Lee Archer Triennial Prize, which considers the award winners in the public, commercial, educational and urban design categories from the three preceding years; the Award for Enduring Architecture, which considers buildings of merit that are over 25 years old; the SWT Blythe Student Prize, for projects completed by students from the University of Tasmania; the Tasmanian Emerging Architect Prize, which is awarded to an up-and-coming architect; the EmAGN Project Award, which recognises a project of merit, whereby members from the EmAGN demographic have made a substantial contribution to the project; the President’s Prize, which is presented to a person who has shown considerable commitment to the profession; and the Tasmanian Architecture Medal, which considers projects across all categories and is considered the best-of-the-best for the year – will be announced at an awards presentation evening on July 5, to be held in Launceston.

The exhibition will be on show at Brooke Street Pier until June 30. All Tasmanians are invited to take a look at the breadth of new architecture being produced in the state and vote for their favourite project in the People’s Choice either at the exhibition, or online at /awards/2025-awards/2025-tasmanian-architecture-awards-gallery
